After reading yesterday’s post, How To Turn LinkedIn Connections Into Interviews…a reader asked,
What should be the next step after getting the emails?
I strive to write a message from the hiring manager’s perspective.
I use a subject line like…
As You Consider Your Future Staffing Needs…
If a manager is short staffed the title will resonate with him.
Even if she’s not short-staffed, she may know someone who is and forward your email.
The Email I Sent…
Reaching out to hiring managers is tricky.
You can’t be a pain, but you do need to explain why you’d be a great addition to their department.
My job was eliminated Oct 2010. When one opportunity slipped away, I tried a different tack.
About two to three weeks before the next quarter started, I sent the email below. I apologize for the eye test.
This email was created to land a position at my former employer. It resulted in 3 separate interviews for one position. It did not pan out.
Three months later, I sent a similar email.
This led to a series of interviews for two separate positions. I landed one of these positions.
If You Don’t Have the Email…
RocketReach is one of the best sources. You also get a limited number of free searches. Many like Hunter. I have a Chrome extension with RocketReach.
Calling Is Always An Option…
You just need to know what you’re going to say before you pick up the phone.
I was able to figure out the hiring manager for a role I was interested in. I called the organization and asked for her by name.
When I reached her, I expressed my interest in the role and told her I was very excited about the opportunity. I did not say much more. I know hiring managers can be very busy.
Since some job seekers apply to a large number of jobs, hiring managers don’t always know how serious you really are.
My call answered that question for her. While I did not land that job, I did go through 3 interviews.
If you can provide some short brief accomplishments that will resonate with a hiring manager that can go a long way.
